| Color | I purchased this scope to mount on a Weatherby Mk V Tacmark in .338 Lapua. I mounted with no problems on the excellent Near Mfg Alphamount and Picatinny rail system. The problems began when it was time to zero. I was unfamiliar with Zeiss scopes, and so reviewed the manual prior to zeroing. First, the manual is either a translation, or was written by someone with relatively poor command of English. Some important details are obscured by the poor sentence structure and grammar. After flailing a bit, asking around for help, and some searching online for instructions or videos, I finally figured out how to release the ballistic stop and slip the index. HOWEVER, this process is tedious and finicky. The turret and stop have to be removed by loosening two TINY set screws. That wouldn’t be a problem at home in the shop, but is a real pain on the range in December. Then, having removed the turret and stop, the manual suggests using a coin to turn the exposed brass screw in the elevation housing. My hands are probably of average, maybe a bit above-average, strength, and I couldn’t safely turn the brass adjustment screw with a coin. I had to use the back of my clip knife blade to get enough leverage, and the screw turned so hard that it was virtually impossible to discern the click stops anymore. Basically, everything about zeroing this scope is a total PITA. I zeroed with factory ammo, then switched to my handloads. I usually have a couple different loads, but there’s no way I’m going to rezero for them. Similarly, my original plan was to use this high-quality scope on another rifle, but there’s no way I’m going to rezero for that either. HOWEVER, once zeroed, the scope seems very good. The optics are super clear and crisp. The reticle that I selected is easy to use, adjustment for parallax is straightforward and positive. The scope has stood up to the recoil of the 338 Lapua with no problem, as one would expect, and eye relief is sufficient to protect the eye with a relatively heavy-recoiling round. The knobs are maybe a little stiff to my liking, but they hold setting without a problem and aren’t going to be moved by an accidental brush against clothing or hands. During zeroing, I moved the elevation turret out and back a couple times (trying to figure it out), and point of impact returned to the original setting. I don’t have another high-end scope like this to compare, so overall I’m satisfied with the Zeiss, but if I find myself coming into enough money to allow me to replace it, I will check out some of the other high-end manufacturer’s to compare. Some of the shortcomings of the Zeiss are really just stupid, and I’m guessing some of the other newer manufacturer’s have worked out simpler, more effective designs. |
