| Dimensions | The Alpha series is the budget version of the G3. The glass and body overall are the same scope. I am so glad I did not spend the extra $100 for the G3 with all the additional features. The glass is very poor quality. Past 20x it is almost impossible to make out any text at 100 yards. The ghosting in the high powers makes this only really usable to about 16x, I figured this would be the case. You might as well get the Primary Arms 4-16×44 for the same price. Primary Arms glass is “unremarkable,” being neither bad or good, you don’t really notice. Basically good enough. I switched over to a rifle with a cheap UTG and was impressed that I could actually make out shots at 100 yards. The other issue is the reticle, there was one review that the reticle was too thin, well that’s how you want a FFP scope to be setup. The problem is the center 1 MOA dot at the center of the reticle, what is the point of that? Now I can’t sight it in to any tighter than 1 MOA? Finally the body does not even fit in the Monstrum 30mm QD scope mount. Why not redesign you mount to actually fit your scopes? Great learning experience to see what kind of performance I could get from a relatively low cost optic, lesson learned. Will not be buying Monstrum scopes ever again.Update:I contact Monstrum support as they had left a reply to my review here on Amazon. I sent a copy of the review and they replied back that they would replace or refund my money for the scope. Support was very prompt in shipping the replacement after they received the broken one. The replacement scope was brand new vacuum sealed, which the first one from Amazon was not. I am wondering if something has changed due to a QC issue. The replacement scope is clearer than the original and focuses better. I will still say that the glass is not amazing, but worth the $160 price tag this time. The parallax ranges are not quite correct, but they get you close. Also for the next iteration of this scope a center chevron would probably still be better than the one MOA center dot. Right now I am using the dot below the center dot to sight-in for precision. Overall great customer service from Monstrum, I would still say Primary Arms has better options, but the price also reflects in PA’s different ranges of optics. |
| Model Number | This is now my 3rd scope from Monstrum Tactical and it is another stellar optic.Basics up front: This is a first focal plane optic, which means the measurements on the reticle zoom with the optic so stay the same relative to the view. The reticle is in minutes of angle (MOA) as well as the adjustment turrets for windage and elevation. The center of the reticle is a 1 MOA dot, which I don’t particularly like on a 6-24x FFP optic (at 1000 yards that dot is 10″ wide). This means I still prefer the reticle on the G2.Fit and Finish: Again the same excellent quality I have come to expect. I particularly like the lever on the zoom adjustment. Unfortunately the color looks off from previous scopes and appears a shade or two more green than what I expect for “Flat dark earth.”Testing: Mounted on a 20 MOA base this scope was easy to zero and held its adjustments on my 224 Valkyrie platform (and I assume it would hold up to much more). At 50 yards I did a 3 full turns of the elevation turret (45 MOA) and my impacts shifted up a perfect 22.5 inches. Left and right adjustments of 8 MOA shifted 4 inches and then the scope returned to zero flawlessly.Room for Improvement: I’d like to see a fine cross hair reticle instead of the 1 MOA dot at the center and a better color match to Flat Dark Earth for the body.Overall, another great scope! |
| Color | I am giving this product 2 stars because I understand that i most likely received a defective unit, and i know this happens, so i am not going to say the whole scope just sucks. The glass is ok, gets VERY fuzzy as you are increasing power. Eye relief is decent, but nothing like a vortex that you can get for similar price. I threw this on my new 6.5 Grendel build and took it out to the range, and the turrets wouldn’t move the reticle. Once i was able to get them to move a little, they were moving in opposite direction (left was right, down was up). I chalk this up to defective turrets, but just wasn’t really impressed with the scope overall. I know it is a budget scope, but i have a vortex copperhead and diamondback (around the same cost as this one) and you can tell the quality in vortex is just better. Glass is clearer at higher magnifications. This scope is also EXTREMELY long. I know its 26x power, but this sits all the way from my charging handle down to the gas block on a rifle length barrel. I think if you are looking for something with more magnification than your standard 3-9 or 4-12, spend the extra $50-60 and get a vortex 6-18x. I returned this scope and bought that vortex and am much happier. If you don’t want to spend the extra money, buy a Crossfire for the same price and 12x power will still be clearer than anything about 16x on this scope. |
| Material | I initially wanted a higher priced scope from another brand but it was out of stock. I took a chance and bought this as a place holder but now I am just going to keep it. I’m impressed. It feels high quality. The glass isn’t Schmidt and Bender quality but for the price it’s excellent. No issues at full power. First focal plane is a great feature. Do wish it was illuminated but I can get over that. If you have a limited budget but want to buy something that’s not trash don’t hesitate to pick one of these up. |
