That said, I still stands by the review of the unit I received. The pics I posted clearly show the glass is not in the same league as Vortex (the Vortex has the bullseye reticle). Of you’re looking for great glass, pony up the money for great glass. Also, based on the other reviews, I’d NOT recommend putting this on a heavy hitter–stick with 5.56 or something gentle unless you test it well within the warranty period. Like I say below, that fiber optic sight is fragile–DO NOT buy this for the iron sights. On ANY combo device in this range, ONLY buy it for its primary function. The other stuff might work well, but they have to cut corners somewhere to get the prices down. Mine is still holding zero. The erectors are still stable. It’s still a decent, inexpensive optic. I recommend buying the best you can afford; I tried to convey that below. I still measure about 3″ of eye relief.I’d still recommend this, with caveats:– QC send to have hit a rough patch. Check it when you get it for adjustability, fit to your rail, and eye relief. If those aren’t good, send it back.– Don’t expect a diamond for a dime. I’ve seen a lot of $50-80 optics and most are garbage. This one (as an optic) seems usable, and as a prismatic scope, impressive for the money. THAT IS IN COMPARISON TO OTHERS IN THE PRICE RANGE.– Don’t expect anything ancillary to the main optic to be as good as the main optic. The irons are nice to have. The scope lights up but the etched reticle is still there if the battery is dead.– IT IS NOT a CQB optic. It is not something to which you should trust your life. It is a decent quality place holder optic or range/light use hunting optic. I’m a long-time hunter, and I have shot a great deal of bad glass over the years. If there’s something I can do to help other hunters or shooters–especially those starting out, or who simply can’t drop $200 or more on a scope–make informed decisions, I like to do so. Upfront, I was really not expecting much from this scope. I expected some cheap piece of plastic mall-ninja-tacticool-2016-version-of-a $10-Rambo-knife-from-the-1980s scope that would have little practical value. I mean really? Tactical rails on the side? (Waaaaaaait a minute….those are actually useful)…. I could not have been more wrong. This scope is solid and has exceeded my (admittedly low) expectations at every step of the way!That said, if you want the glass of a Vortex Spitfire, you can’t get it for this price. Anyone telling you otherwise is trying to sell you something. UUQ represents a budget scope with decent glass for what it is–and what it is is not a bad thing, by any stretch. I struggle, from that perspective, with how to grade it. Compared to a higher-end prism scope, it would not score a 4 or 5 star rating. But among budget-end scopes, I’d say this is easily at the top of its class. I would expect to pay well over $100 for the quality of the glass, BEFORE taking into account the other features, which SHOULD push it over that price. So long as UUQ keeps it’s price point, it represents a really great value for beginners, budget shooters, or someone that just doesn’t want to spend more money on another gun, but wants a decent value for the price.Let me break this down piece by piece; I will update with pics later–I have some comparisons with a Spitfire so you can see the difference.GLASS: This has really clear glass for a sub-$100 scope. Contrast is fairly sharp and it was generally well focused. There is substantial aberration at the very edges, leading to a sort of “fish eye” effect. Truth be told, if I didn’t say anything, many people would not notice. It’s only going to impact you if you focus in on it. It is NOT, however, present in the Spitfire, which is clear edge to edge. My Spitfire, however, is NOT magnified, so for me, the aberration would be a decent price to pay for a 4x magnification. There is always a trade off–especially on scopes in the range. But this is a genuine prism scope with a 4x magnification. Solid value.EYE RELIEF: Relief is about 3″, maybe a bit more–generous enough that a 223 is no problem, neither would a heavier caliber, on the AR (except the 458/500 etc). The eye box is less forgiving and more critical than other red dots I’ve used, but then again, it’s magnified and the others are not. So kinda a wash on that count.RETICLE: This is a very INTERESTING reticle. Remember, that as a prism scope, the reticle is etched in the glass and lights up, making it useable even if the battery goes out. The reticle itself has hash marks with numbers, indicating holdover marks out to 400 yards and beyond. Works well as a simple crosshair, which some prefer to the bullseye reticle of the Vortex. Also gives you aiming points for further out. These are reeeeeally tiny, but well-defined, and would be useful if you are focusing on a target further out (i.e. they are not so big as to interfere with your sight picture even out to 400 yards). However, my range is just 100 yards, so I can’t try it out further there. I assume it’s designed as holdover points for a 55 grain bullet. By the way, the reticle is the only part that lights up. It lights up in three levels in three different colors. I was partial to blue–less overpowering and more subtle than red or green.ADJUSTMENT: While I didn’t “shoot the box” to see if its repeatable and accurate adjustments, I don’t know what the point is with a 4x scope. Adjustment is done via small knobs that probably require a dime or penny to turn (I used the small screwdriver on my Swiss Army Knife). Clicks are positive–something lacking is scopes with higher pricetags sometimes! There was enough internal adjustment and to spare to get me on target and zeroed in fast.DURABILITY: I ran about 30 rounds through it today and it held zero. I know that hardly constitutes a torture test, but I have seen scopes this price fail with less. What was telling was I contacted the manufacturer to ask about the durability. If it wasn’t designed for a shotgun, I’m not going to put it on one so I can watch it fail on purpose. How does that help you or any of us? If it’s meant for a 223 and you want it for a 223 and some guy blows it apart on a 300 WSM, you might say “Wow! I don’t want a scope that will fall apart!” when in reality, this scope may be perfectly useful for its intended application (which was also the one you wanted). Rather, I’d prefer to give you an evaluation based on its limitations so you can decide if you can deal with the parameters of what the equipment is designed for (heck, I wouldn’t through a Leupold Rimfire scope on a 300 WSM and expect it to hold together well, but that doesn’t make the Leupy a bad scope–just mated to the wrong gun). THAT SAID, I was PLEASANTLY surprised when the owner wrote back and CHALLENGED me to throw this on a shotgun and try it out with slugs for deer. “It can take it” was the response I got. Well ok. In that case, throw this on whatever you want I guess. I haven’t verified it, but it seems solid and I have no reason to doubt the man. Time–and further testing –will tell. Remember, this is a prismatic scope–there are no wires to break on the cross hairs–and there is a simple, yet solid, erector in the middle that holds zero. If the erector holds, the zero holds. I plan to test on a 44 mag lever gun and a slug gun. It’s not the MOST extreme punishment I can imagine….but it’s pretty close. I’ve seen plenty of scopes shaken apart by a slug gun’s recoil.OTHER FEATURES: I really like the fiber optic sight on top. For a 300 Blackout or shotgun (or 44 mag for that matter), it’s a handy feature. I question it’s resilience given lack of structure over the top of the fiber optic, but will enjoy it while I can, and given it really is ancillary to the scope, I’m not whacking off a star for it. I would, however, STRONGLY encourage UUQ to add some struts across that fiber optic to help it stay in place just a little longer. I WOULD note that Bushnell put a top sight on one of their big clunky Red Dots, but it is neither fiber optic nor adjustable! Take THAT Bushnell! The whole thing appears one piece, including the rail attachments on the side. Good place for a light and/or laser–I’d prefer a laser since I am used to mounting my lights further down. However, if you are hunting with a bolt gun, shot gun, or other gun with no front rail for a light for night hunting, here you are. No more excuses to put off buying that 1100 lumen light :).Battery life seems good. I accidentally left it on overnight on high and it wasn’t drained the next day–still as bright as the day before. My older Bushnells would have died. Again, not a torture test…..more like an accidental annoyance test of the gear’s capabilities.BOTTOM LINE: I recommend this scope to someone wanting an AR scope who is on a budget. Sure, there are better scopes, but you will pay twice as much or more for them. For some, the extra money is worth it. If not, this is a solid performer. It’s not a $300 scope, but it’s good for what it is, and I think you will be satisfied with it. I have not tested out the waterproof and fogproof aspects yet, but the o-rings everywhere seem secure. I will update as I can, but for now, this is a scope I’d not have a problem saying you get more than you pay for with this. How much more remains to be seen. I live by and always tell people to adhere to the general rule: buy and use the best glass you can afford. Look, if you can buy an Eotech or Aimpoint or Vortex Spitfire with a magnifier (or the 3x Spitfire), by all means, go for it. If it’s a gun you intend to use a lot, you will ultimately be happier with the initial outlay. But if you don’t have $450-1000 to drop on optics at the moment, do NOT let that stop you from getting in the game. UUQ is a SOLID value. If you can only afford glass under $100, this is probably among if not the best scope you can buy for that price.If in my further testing, I find reason to change that, I certainly will. Remember, this review is based on comparisons to a Vortex Spitfire NON-magnified, careful examination of the glass, sight picture, and other features from the shooter’s perspective, and a limited 30 rounds of 223 at the range. It is also backed up by the owner’s enthusiastic response: “it can handle it,” regarding slug guns. So long as the erectors hold (and they have less stress put on them in a more compact scope like this), the zero will hold. I have not had a chance to torture test this with freezer-to-summer-heat tests, or dumping it in water. I have honestly never once dropped any of my firearms in a body of water. Ever. Nor do I go from 0-90 degrees in 15 seconds. Building a tough scope invites tough challenges. If it helps better evaluate it, I will consider doing so. But for now, this has my stamp of approval as a decent scope.DISPOSITION: While I really have no need for another scope, it may sit on my shotgun if it proves able, replacing the Vortex Spitfire I had planned, or on the 44 magnum. I have decent glass, but I like the fixed 4x mag and…well….I’m pretty enamored with that prismatic cross hair 🙂 Otheriwse, it will proudly ride atop a 16″ carbine running a bumpfire stock 😉 If it can take slug, it can take simulated auto fire for a 223!I will also monitor other reviews to see if other people have issues cropping up to see if they can be repeated in mine. While the company DID give me this at a significant discount to get out and evaluate it, like I HOPE I’ve made clear I’m not just a shill giving 5 stars to anyone who asks for it. My goal is to find good, solid values–no not a $79 Zeiss (believe me, I would be sharing THAT deal here 😉 ), but solid gear you can get your money’s worth and then some. I know how bad it sucks to buy something with what little you have, only to find it to be a turd someone tried to polish and pass off as a gem. I hate feeling “taken, “suckered,” “bamboozled,” or “flimflammed.”I write reviews from the perspective of the guy who works three weeks of OT to buy that gun, and JUST wants to finally get it to the range! It’ll be a year or two before he can “upgrade his glass” but in the interim, needs something to not let him down. In two years, he may be pleasantly surprised he doesn’t “need” the upgrade, and can get by a while longer still on this scope. I write the truth. I ask sellers NOT to send me things they know deep down aren’t very good. Again, I was taken aback by UUQ. The owner seems legit–he knows he is making a good product and is not afraid to have it shown to be a good product. I will say that I CANNOT vouch for any of UUQ’s other scopes–I know they make some seriously long-range scopes, and those are really hard to both get right and to use. I personally try to limit my scope magnification to less than 16 when possible. For benchrest and long-distance prairie dog shooters who can stand a HIGHLY critical eye box and all the craziness associated with 20x scopes, go for it. I can’t evaluate that. But if their lower-power scopes are similarly built, UUQ MAY be a company to give serious consideration to fro ALL your rifle needs (although I suspect, the edge-aberration may be oresent; if so, it can go from “I’m noticing because I am picking apart flaws” on a 4x prism scope, to “That dang scope set on high is screwing up all my peripheral vision at 16x!” I have nothing to base these concerns on. Hopefully someone can add some more detail and help fill out the picture of the UUQ Brand. | Model Number | I’m extremely happy with this UUQ scope. Size, clarity, mounts on both sides, line sight on top easy to switch and adjust your view from scope view to top sight for CQC. Ive only owened and used one other high power top brand scope on my 30/30 for hunting, so i dont have a lot of experience in the realm of comparison, however I bought this scope as my first scope for my new S&W AR-15 sport 2 and can consistantly put the 223’s where i want them to round after round. This is only after about 300 rounds, but i wanted to start off inexpensive at least until i learned more about scopes in particular. Looks right now as if i might not be needing anything more expensive. Bottom line, for price and how it performs. Id recommend it to others.Do wish it came with lens covers tho. |

After bore sighting the scope at 100 yards I decided to run 50 loads down the barrel to test the accuracy of the scope. D.e.a.d on! To say this scope is accurate and well built is an understatement. | Material | I purchased a 9mm carbine, wasn’t originally going to purchase a scope as carbines aren’t all that accurate over 150 yards or so. I came across this scope and figured for $50 I may as well try it out. I am glad I did!Pros:- The eye relief (the distance you have to hold the scope from your eye to see the whole picture) is 4 inches, this is a good distance. To short and you may hit your eye when the rifle kicks and become a pirate, too long and you have to hold the rifle too far from you, the standard is usually around 3.5 inches.- The reticle is etched into the glass, this means that it will not break, the most popular design is to use wires which is fine but they can break and then you have no reticle. It is also setup for drop shots in a Christmas tree pattern meaning there are markings for drop shots at 200, 300, 400 yards- Illuminated reticle that can be changed between red, green and blue with 3 different intensities. The green and blue work nice at indoor ranges, the red is best for outside in my opinion- The quality of the glass is much better than I expected and comparable to much more expensive scopes, I had low expectations but this blew me away. The field of vision is good, not much peripheral view but not terribly important to me- The fiber optic second sight on top of the scope seems like a nice feature, honestly have not used it yet- The look of the scope itself is very nice, is very nice quality and the tactile style compliments my rifle well- Fixed zoom, I was between putting this as a pro or a con. It is very nice that it is 4x static magnification and that it is fixed zoom as I just need to look down range and I’m ready to go with no adjustments. This is great especially from like 25 to 75 yards. At about 100 yards it starts seeming underpowered. Now, I knew this when I purchased it, if you are planning on using this for an AR or a bolt action that you’ll be shooting over 100 yards regularly, I would look elsewhere. It would be nice if the manufacturer would release a zooming scope that can be put in front of this scope, they may already have one I will have to look. This is not so much a complaint as I knew when I purchased it that 100 yards or so would be the most effective range, but now that I have sighted it in, I would like to try further distances where I can see the target better.- Antifogging is great, haven’t had any fogging issues even shooting outside in 15 degree snowy weatherCons:- The adjustments for wind age and elevation require you to use something like your nail to turn them, I carry a dime in my range bag and use this to adjust. Not a huge deal, many scopes are setup like this. If the manufacturer is looking for something to change for improvements I would highly recommend this. Again, not a deal breaker or uncommon, and while this scope is already the best sub $100 scope I’ve used, this would really elevate it to being better than most scopes period- The mounting process is easy enough although using just a 9mm, it became loose on the rail after a few clips the first time I brought it to the range and had sighted it in. It became loose not only on the mounting screws which isnt too uncommon but the bolts holding the scope on the mounting plate became loose. I would recommend prior to mounting, put it on the rail and see where you like it, take it off, then there are 2 Allen bolts that attach to the base of the scope and attach it to the mounting bracket. Take these off, superglue the top of the mounting bracket where it is contact with the scope itself and in the screw holes for the Allen’s then superglue the tops of the Allen screws after putting them in. Mount the scope, once you have it where you like it, tighten the mounting screws and put a dab of superglue in the hole on top of the mounting screws. The reason I recommend this is that if you tighten them too hard to prevent them from loosening you could potentially dent the rail if it is aluminum then no scope will mount. This process is what I ended up doing and after feeding 200 rounds through it yesterday, the scope stayed firmly in place and sighted.- The knob for the reticle illumination is fine but I really wish there was a button or something to turn it off instead of turning it to one of the off settings. The first time i used it, I could have sworn I shut it off. Second time I went to use it, it had been on in the case for a few weeks and the battery was dead. Now, I am not sure if I did not shut it off or if it somehow turned on in the case and not a huge deal just something to consider.Overall for the $50 investment, I am incredibly happy. I would recommend this scope for almost any application from pistols to higher powered rifles if you require a great scope for around 100 yards. You probably could even use this on a shotgun if you really wanted to, the quality is great and it feels like it would hold up well under almost any conditions. Only improvements I can offer are offering a secondary magnifying scope and making the wind and elevation adjustments into actual knobs. Make sure you follow the glue steps I outlined in the cons section! If you purchase this you will be very happy with your decision |
