DimensionsI would preface this review by saying that I haven’t put it through its paces as far as making sure it holds zero over time or anything like that. So look to other reviews for that. That said…I like it. Here’s the pros and cons:Pros:- very heavy duty, feels like it would put up with a lot- the locking turrets are nice, it’s nice to zero the scope then set the turret reading to zero at your zero (not sure of a better way to say that) after locking the turret so that it isn’t moving around…a problem I’ve had with other finger turret scopes in the past- glass is clear, eye relief is fantastic for this priced scope…I can just bring it to bear with my stock at any level of extension and eye relief works great and is super easy to see through quickly- controls for the reticle illumination are great, perfect for easy on easy off and easily getting it how you want it quickly and keeping it there, most intuitive and quick reticle illumination controls I think I’ve ever used…usually it’s one or the other: intuitive or quick (buttons can be quick but usually complicated with all the settings, or a dial that is simple but isn’t as quick as pressing a button and being right where you want to be instantly)…they managed both.- the reticle illumination actually has useful illumination levels! Most are “super bright”, “98% of super bright”, and “95%” of super bright. This has super bright, for sure (very bright even in bright daylight, EASILY seen, not just adequate), but also has super low settings where the reticle appears totally black in light, then you swing over to a darkened area and the reticle is still visible because there’s illumination on and it becomes clearly visible- very fine crosshairs great for precision, but at the same time illumination solves any possible problems with seeing them if needed- very quick to acquire on 1x setting, faster than I’d thought it would be, comparable to my high quality red dots…maybe not quite as fast, but close. this comes back to the great eye relief, the “zone” in which the optic is usable is just huge for an optic of this price and very easy to get in- binden aiming concept works ok when reticle is illuminated too- the flip cap lens covers actually seem pretty good quality, they’re pretty solid- the mounts that come with it are beefy, very solid. That’s important to me, I’ve seen too many great optics made crappy by crappy mounts- having so many color options is nice to know is there…but to be honest I think all I’d ever use is green and red…but the nice thing is that they seemed to recognize that and not make the controls complicated with all their colors…the green and red are really the mainstay of the controlsCons:- Not true mils. The formula that comes on the card basically shows that their mils are 1 meter equals 1 “mil” at 400 meters, when a real mil is closer to 1 meter equals 1 mil at 1000 meters. To be honest, I knew this would be the case when I bought it though, you really can’t do true mils very well at 4.5x magnification, they’d be too tiny. Still, it would have been nice for them to just put a dot every X amount of mils to make math easier…theirs is roughly 2.5 real mils equals 1 of their mils…so still useful, but a whole number would have been better (for example a simple 2 to 1 would have been EASILY doable on this reticle and been SO much more useful). In fact, since the “mils” are an odd non-standard version of mils anyway, and the turrets are in MOA…I might just work out how many MOA their “mils” are (I’m guessing about 8.5 off the top of my head) and use MOA instead with this scope…might end up easier. And it also would have been nice if they had advertised this to others that maybe wouldn’t have realized it wasn’t going to be real mils. Heck, it’s not even in the manual, I just had to figure this all out from the equation they give on the included range card. Which brings me to my next point:- Lack of documentation. All that comes with it is generic info that applies to most of their scopes and has a little bit about individual models, but nothing deep. I’d like to know more things, like are the reticle mils designed to work at 1x, 2x, 4x, 4.5x (it is second focal plane, so the markings are only accurate at 1 magnification)…I can guess with 99% surety that it’s the max (4.5x), and I can confirm that at the range later…but it’d be nice if they just put it in the dang manual so that I can be positive from the get go. Same for the reticle itself…there’s actually dots AND dashes between the dots. They’re pretty well spaced…so I’m not actually sure if they intend the dashes to be mil markings or half-mil markings…again, I’ll have to figure that out the hard way with some tests at the range once I get around to it. I’d also like hard data like what % of a mil (or at least of their custom designation of a mil) the diameter of the dots are, etc. There’s just no info anywhere near that depth documented.— Basically this product would be about 10x better if they just used a more logical measurement for their concept of mil and documented it better…both things that would have costed practically nothing and were just poor choices made in the design stages…sad to see that the product could have been so much better even for the same costs…but, at the same time, keep in mind that I rated it 4 stars for good reason: it’s a fantastic optic for its price, I have no idea how they did it this cheaply. I would not hesitate to buy again assuming it holds up to old man time…and I might.
Model NumberThis scope is well built and has clear glass. The 1x setting is ot a true 1x, more like 1.25 but shooting with both eyes open is stil easy by blinking my non-dominant eye just once to allow the dominant eye to take over. Eye relief is sufficent for use on my IWI Tavor, however the included QD rings were much to low to be usable.
ColorOverall it is a good scope. A little heavy, but sturdy so far. The one problem is the clicks are mushy and when you reset the turrets there is a little movement. it would have gotten a 5 if it did not have these 2 thing going on. Will be writing more as we use this scope more to let you know how it holds up.
MaterialThis scope looks good and is marketed with some nice features, however mine had issues. The ring mounts were missing the tension set screws for the QD lever mechanisms, plus the diopter (rear focus ring) was loose and moved side to side. This side movement shifted the point of impact. I have other UTG products, however this is one I cannot recommend.
Power SourceAs others have stated, this is a good scope for this price. It’s a bit heavy. But, I’ve had it on my go to rifle, a Ruger 10/22, for 1.5 years and as of yesterday, zero is still spot-on. Also, it’s still using the original batteries and the reticle is bright and clear. The sight picture is clear and eye relief is forgiving. I’m very happy with this scope.
